Indigital’s Caring for Country program: a year of impact in Cape York
One year into Indigital’s Caring for Country program in Cape York, real change is taking shape. In partnership with Rio Tinto, the three-year initiative is supportingTraditional Owners in Weipa, Aurukun, Napranum, and Mapoon to build digital skills, integrate conservation technology, and create economic pathways beyond mining. At the heart of this work is a commitment to Country, Culture, and Community, ensuring that Indigenous knowledge leads the way in shaping a sustainable future.
At Indigital, we believe change doesn’t happen in boardrooms, it happens on Country. That’s why this program is built on deep listening, co-design, and long-term commitment. Over the past year, the Caring for Country: Growing Conservation through Digital Literacy program has taken shape through:
On-Country masterclasses in Weipa, Napranum, Mapoon, and Aurukun, blending digital storytelling, cultural knowledge sharing, and conservation tech.
Teach It Together workshops equipping teachers and community facilitators with AR and VR skills to embed in schools and youth programs.
Community-led technology adoption, with two out of four participating communities now running sessions independently.
One year in, we’re already seeing meaningful progress:
83% of participants see technology as a tool for cultural learning.
Cultural preservation is a growing focus, with communities using AR/VR to record and pass on intergenerational knowledge.
Water and land restoration efforts are shaping next year’s work, incorporating water monitoring and digital twin technologies.
